The term sports hernia is really a re-branding of the old familiar term inguinal or groin hernia. The term is applied to the development of an inguinal hernia when activity associated with sport is thought to be the cause. It is a more “glamorous” term, lending a sense of bravado to what would otherwise be considered a common ailment.
Sports hernias, aka inguinal hernias are treated by laparoscopic or open techniques, the former providing a quicker return to activity.
