Umbilical hernias occur at the belly button, also known as the umbilicus. They commonly occur in young children but most are seen in adults. Men and women both develop umbilical hernias and it is the most common form of abdominal wall hernia. Like other forms of hernia, umbilical hernias can be accompanied by pain. Over time, umbilical hernias can get quite large.
Repair is simple and usually preventative. Having an umbilical hernia repaired early reduces the risk of enlargement over time. As with any type of surgical procedure, evaluation by a Board certified surgeon is mandatory.
