The term ventral hernia applies to all hernia defects which affect the abdominal wall. It is a general term which can be applied to such hernias as incisional, Spigelian, epigastric and umbilical. Typically, however, the term ventral hernia is used to denote an abdominal wall hernia that arises spontaneously and is not associated with a previous abdominal surgical incision. It can be applied to umbilical or belly button hernias if they are large and extend beyond the normal boundaries of the belly button.
The treatment plan for the repair of ventral hernias is best determined by an experienced hernia surgeon.
